Shield and cup reprieve for Carniny

CARNINY Rangers attended the IFA Appeals Panel last Monday night to appeal against the decision that their player Leslie McCaughran was an ineligible player when he played in the Junior Cup Quarter Final and their subsequent dismissal from the Coca Cola Junior Cup Semi Final.

On Wednesday they received the great news that their appeal had been upheld and McCaughran was not classed as an ineligible player and they were reinstated to the Junior Cup.

The Co Antrim FA were awaiting this decision to decide if Carniny Rangers could continue in the Junior Shield and have now arranged the Paddy Power Junior Shield Semi-Final for this Thursday, April 22, which means the BSML postponed the Arkmedia sponsored O'Kane Cup Final which was to be played tonight (Tuesday, April 20) to a later date.

The following Thursday, April 29, Carniny meet Immaculata in the Coca Cola Junior Cup Semi Final at Dixon Park Ballyclare, again with a 7.30pm kick-off in their chase for what would be an amazing double.

SAMMY MOORE TROPHY

Dunloy Athletic 9, Randalstown 2: Dunloy have almost guaranteed their place in the final of the Sammy Moore Trophy with this 9-2 thrashing of Randalstown in the first leg of the semi-final.

It took Dunloy until 15 minutes to take the lead when a long ball out of defence by Kevin Martin was controlled by Chris Smiley who then fired home from 18 yards.

Randalstown hit back soon after when Andy Highman found the net with a volley from 20 yards out.

Dunloy regained their lead when Stephen Dooey outpaced the Randalstown defence to score and make it 2-1. It was 3-1 just before the break when Barry McGonigle rose highest to head home a John Paul McQuillan corner kick.

Randalstown came out a determined side after the break and they made it 3-2 10 minutes in when a Stephen Dripps free kick from 40 yards deceived everyone and found the corner of the net.

Dunloy made it 4-2 on the hour mark when Dooey pounced on an error at the back to fire home. After this Dunloy ran riot as Smiley made it five when he beat a defender before slotting the ball home then substitute Nigel Elliott made it 6-2 with a long range drive.

Barry Murphy got in on the act when he got on the end of a Mark McFadden ball to fire home. Dooey completed his hat trick when he headed home the eighth from a Chris Brogan cross field ball and then late on Smiley made it 9-2 and completed his hat trick after a goal mouth scramble.

Wakehurst Athletic 1, Westend Athletic 1: This Harryville Derby finished in deadlock so the second leg this Saturday will determine who qualifies for the final.

It was Westend who took the lead ten minutes before half-time, with the best bit passage of play in the half, when some good passing football by Gary McIlroy and Mark Watson allowed Stephen Calderwood to run through and knock the ball over the advancing Wakehurst keeper Andrew Steele.

Wakehurst came out hungrier in the second half and deservedly got back on level terms mid-way through the second half, when a Jason Mitchell shot from the corner of the penalty box evaded everyone and went into the corner of the net to set up a tense second leg.

Demesne Star 3, Waveney Swifts 2: This was the big Cup upset of the day with third Division Demesne Star knocking out second division opponents Waveney.

Demesne had the better of the early exchanges but it was Paul Craig who opened the scoring for Waveney in the 38th minute, unleashing a long range effort which flew into the top right hand corner.

Demesne showed more urgency in the second half and in the 58th minute the ball dropped to Michael Ross in the Waveney penalty area and he made no mistake in levelling the score.

Demesne then went ahead on 70 minutes when a mistake by Waveney defence allowed Jordan Bamber to somehow scramble the ball home.

Swifts threw everything at Demesne and on 83 minutes a cross from Darren Wilson rebounded off the crossbar from Ernie Corry to knock the ball home which Demesne claimed was not over the line but the referee deemed it had crossed the line and the sides were level.
